CinTurs Master Webinars

researchathenaemai

CinTurs is organising a new session of its CinTurs Master Webinars on current research in tourism, and we're delighted to welcome Dr Brian Garrod, Professor of Marketing at Swansea University's School of Management and Director of the Centre for Visitor Economy Research (CVER), who will talk about the emotional work of parents of autistic children on holiday.

This theme explores how parents of autistic children manage emotions while navigating the complex emotional landscape of holidaymaking. Through an inductive analysis of interviews with parents, the study distinguishes between the emotional labour performed by tourism providers and the emotion work undertaken by parents during family holidays. While theories of emotional labour and emotion work are often conflated, they involve different actors, processes, and implications. The work advocates for redefining parental efforts as "emotion work", highlighting its unique sociological implications in contrast to emotional labour. This perspective addresses a significant gap in tourism research concerning families with autistic children and provides insights into how emotion-management responsibilities can be redistributed to alleviate some of the burdens faced by parents.

We hope you can join us, and we would be grateful if you could help us circulate this invitation to ATHENA members. Thank you!

The session will be held online and is scheduled for 20 March (Thursday) at 17h00 (Lisbon, Portugal, time zone).

Registration via e-mail: cintursinfo@ualg.pt. Attendance is free, but registration is mandatory.
