Session ‘Climate Change, Water Resources and Sustainability”

Track

Drinking water is a crucial resource for tourism. This activity is recognized as a massive user of water, which has caused enormous pressure on local and regional water supplies. The complex relationship between water and tourism has been gaining prominence and increasing importance from a tourism perspective. This is especially true considering that (i)the availability of water and its quality are essential for the attractiveness of a tourist destination; (ii) the negative impacts on water resources can reduce the viability of a given tourist destination and decrease the tourist's desire to revisit that destination. The issue of water sustainability in tourism has become increasingly urgent, mainly since many of the world's major tourist destinations are situated in water-scarce regions, such as the Mediterranean. This urgency is further underscored by the well-documented trend of decreasing precipitation and rising temperatures, reducing water availability, and depletion of surface and underground water resources.

Topics

This session is intended to discuss topics related to the following items:

  • Tourism in the context of climate change

  • Conflicts in the use of water in tourist regions

  • Water scarcity and image in Tourism

  • Sustainable practices in water consumption in tourism

  • Environmental carrying capacity and water sustainability in tourist destinations

  • Spatial and temporal distribution of water resources

  • Methods and techniques used to evaluate the water availability and quality in tourism regions.

Session ‘Workforce Dynamics in Tourism & Hospitality’

TrackThe tourism and hospitality industry faces unprecedented changes in its workforce landscape, making this theme highly relevant for researchers and practitioners. Labour shortages, heightened by demographic shifts and post-pandemic recovery, impact the industry, making workforce recruitment and retention increasingly challenging. Beyond operational concerns, workers’ well-being and quality of life have come to the forefront, especially given the high-pressure, customer-facing nature of the tourism and hospitality sector. Ensuring decent working conditions and fostering an environment of inclusion and diversity is crucial to attracting and retaining talent. Migrant and expatriate workers, who form a significant part of this workforce, bring valuable cultural and social capital but face distinct challenges in terms of integration, rights, and access to career development opportunities. Moreover, the rise of technology and automation is reshaping job roles, demanding new skills and qualifications that many employees may lack, creating a pressing need for ongoing training and skill-building. As the industry grows and evolves, so do the challenges related to human capital. This session welcomes contributions that address these pressing concerns, fostering discussions on how the industry can adapt to these challenges while maintaining a skilled, diverse, resilient and sustainable workforce.
